The 5th-century Theodosian Walls
Built in the 5th century under Emperor Theodosius II, a moat and two lines of walls ran from the Sea of Marmara to the Golden Horn. For almost a thousand years they guarded the city, until the cannons of Mehmed II broke through in 1453.
